Question
Why did my property taxes go up so much this year?
Answer
The State Legislature took the State Fair, State Forestry, School General and Welfare Funds from the county tax rate structure in exchange for the Property Tax Replacement Credit that was previously received. The Homestead Credit replacement % was also lowered. The Legislature also allowed an additional 35% deduction of the remaining value after all other deductions if the property value is under $600,000. The Legislature also allowed an additional 25% deduction of the remaining value after all other deductions if the property value is over $600,000. Those additional deductions reduced the assessed values and increased the tax rates. There were some units that added debt or new funds to the tax rate structure. All of these issues add to the increase in taxes. In general, the biggest factor seems to be the loss of the PTRC money that previously came from the State of Indiana. The rates that were previously included in the county tax rate structure were much less than the PTRC money received.
